Translated Vase_2017 TVGJW 1

Since the early 2000s, Korean sculptor Yeesookyung has been making objects that speak to the power (and difficulty) of cultural connection. In her best-known series, entitled Translated Vase, she combines fragments of abandoned ceramics, joining them together with gold seams. This places emphasis on the lines of breakage that have occurred in the objects’ lifetimes. It is also significant for Yee that the process results in a non-hierarchical structure, in which all parts are treated as equivalent. The work could be taken as a metaphor for other kinds of connection, across the rifts that exist between past and present, society and systems, and cultures of different countries.
