Maggie Wells

Head

The New York sculptor Maggie Wells writes of seeking a certain rightness in her work, but one that always includes a certain “element of oddness – something unforeseen.” Her ceramic forms, with their chalky surfaces and off-kilter, quasi-figurative profiles, speak to the modernist tradition but also have the weathered grace of ancient sculpture. Each individual work has a strongly individuated profile; in groups, the play of positive and negative space offers an addition, potentially ever-changing sculptural experience.
