Antoine Poncet

Sculpture

Though a somewhat recherché figure today, Antoine Poncet stood at the very epicenter of the French avant garde at midcentury. The grandson of Maurice Denis, he studied with Ossip Zadkine, was friendly with such luminaries as Constantin Brancusi, and engaged in a period of collaboration with the Surrealist Jean Arp from 1953 to 1955. This asymmetrical organic sculpture in plaster, made just a few years later, reflects the last of these artistic connections.
