Swedish-Chilean designer Anton Alvarez burst on to the scene in 2014 with his Thread Wrapping Machine, a DIY device that could transform seemingly any solid object into an energetic polychrome artwork. More recently, Alvarez’s interest in the design of systems and processes has led him naturally to the ceramic extrusion technique. Typically, this process is employed for serial production, but he treats it as the perfect means of creating one-off forms. Though some aspects of each piece are pre-planned – like the polychrome palette and the texture imparted by the extrusion die – the unpredictable accumulation of material makes each piece unique.
