Family Bust No. 1

Despite the sophistication of her ideas and forms, which are drawn from a huge spectrum of sources, Faye Toogood is at heart a highly personal designer. Both in fashion and in domestically-scaled objects (the two main avenues of her creativity) she prizes intuition and instinctive narrative. In this upright ceramic sculpture, she reinterprets the genre of the “family bust” – a phrase that implies traditional lineage – as a totally abstract, amorphous pile of material. The implication is that one’s identity is held private within the self, impossible to render representationally, and always in active formation.
