The story of 20th century French studio pottery is still relatively little known, overshadowed by the better documented stories of England, America, and Japan. One of its leading lights was certainly Mado Jolain, who developed her involvement in the craft during World War II, working alongside René Legrand. She developed connections to international figures (visiting Shoji Hamada in Japan, and Bernard Leach in England, in the mid-1960s) and exhibited at Colette Guéden’s leading ceramic gallery Printemps.
