Thaddeus Wolfe

Untitled

New York glass artist Thaddeus Wolfe has breathed new life into the technique of mold-blown glass. He first assembles architectonic sculptural molds out of Styrofoam and other materials, then uses these to shape hot glass, finally articulating the form with cutting and polishing. While in themselves more or less traditional, these techniques are entirely transformed in Wolfe’s hands, allowing him to achieve a de-constructivist repertoire in which each work has its own rambunctious glory. The selection of recent works at Object & Thing show Wolfe engaging in new experiments, including slumping rather than his usual mold-blowing, and the combination of polychromatic glass with chalky plaster.
